Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 17, 2026

OpenChat is built with privacy and user control at its core. This policy explains what data the app accesses, how it is used, what is sent to third parties, and what stays under your control.

1. No OpenChat Backend

OpenChat has no backend server, no OpenChat account, and no first-party analytics. We do not operate infrastructure that receives, stores, or processes your chats, API keys, or attachments. The app runs on your device and communicates directly with services you choose.

2. Bring Your Own Key (BYOK)

OpenChat is a bring-your-own-key (BYOK) client. You connect API keys from AI and search providers you select. Those keys are stored securely in your device's Keychain and are used only to send requests directly to the providers you configure. We never receive, store, or process your API keys on our servers.

3. Data Sent to Third-Party Services You Choose

When you send a message, enable web search, use voice input, or otherwise use a connected feature, OpenChat transmits the content required for that request directly from your device to the third-party services you configured. Depending on your settings, this may include:

Those third parties handle data under their own privacy policies and terms. OpenChat does not control how they process, retain, or use that data. Review each provider's documentation before connecting a key.

4. Conversations Stay on Your Device

Your chat history, rules, memory, and skills are stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. They are not synced to OpenChat servers. Temporary chats are not persisted.

5. Optional Photos and Camera

OpenChat can access photos you select or images you capture through the camera. These are used locally in the app and, when you send them in a message, are transmitted to the AI provider you chose for that conversation. They are not uploaded to OpenChat infrastructure.

6. Optional Microphone

The microphone is used only when you enable voice input or voice mode. Audio is processed by the speech or realtime provider you choose, not by OpenChat servers.

7. Local Notifications and Live Activities

When background response generation is enabled, OpenChat may show a Live Activity (Dynamic Island / Lock Screen) while an assistant reply is generating in the background, and may send a local notification on your device when the reply completes. These are generated and displayed on-device; notification content (such as the conversation title) is not sent to OpenChat servers. Tapping a notification opens the relevant chat in the app.

8. No Third-Party Analytics or Ads

OpenChat does not include third-party analytics SDKs, advertising SDKs, or tracking. We do not sell your data.

9. Open Source

OpenChat is open source. You can inspect the code, build it yourself, and verify how data is handled at github.com/robert-garay/openchat.
